Remembering Rev. Dr. B. T. Bishop
Dear church family,
This past Saturday, our community lost an incredible man. Dr. Bernard Taylor Bishop, Sr. went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, February 3, 2018. Dr. Bishop was a godly man who loved the Lord with all his heart, soul, mind and strength. He was a towering figure of faith, not only as a man, but as the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Elizabethtown, where he served for 52 years. He was a strong man of faith, character and integrity. He shared God's Word clearly with conviction and wisdom from God.
I remember Dr. Bishop as a pastor who was a dear friend of Severns Valley Baptist Church. His time at First Baptist Church extended through the ministries of Dr. Kruschwitz, Dr. Cobble, Dr. Compton and myself. During those years, Dr. Bishop and the pastors of Severns Valley have exchanged pulpits many times. In 2016, it was my honor to participate in the celebration of First Baptist Church's 150th anniversary by preaching, at Dr. Bishop’s invitation, from his pulpit.
Severns Valley has lost a great friend and co-laborer. I have lost a friend and colleague. Dr. Bishop’s ministry will continue through the lives of those he has led to faith in Christ and discipled. That is the highest legacy anyone could ever desire.
In the days ahead, please pray for the Bishop family as well as the First Baptist Church congregation. We mourn the loss of this great man, but do not grieve as those who have no hope. “May Christ be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.” (Philippians 1:20)
